Isidor Kaufmann
(Arad, Hungary 1853–1921 Vienna) Portrait of a Gentleman Sitting, signed Isidor Kaufmann, oil on panel, 52 x 42 cm, framed, (Rei)
Kaufmann captured his subjects’ social standing in Viennese society with a masterly touch. This elegantly dressed gentleman sits confidently on a finely carved armchair, facing the viewer. He shows a certain similarity to published portraits of the artist himself as well as to Zwi Peres Chajes (1876-1927), Rabbi, academic and fervent adherent of Zionism. Chajes settled in Vienna in 1918 and became the Chief Rabbi. Kaufmann often repeatedly used the same object in his paintings; the armchair in the present painting can also be found in his works „The Stockbroker Isidor Gewitsch“ and in the „Portrait of the son of the Rabbi of Belz“.
